BUILDING A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN

Green-ness

What The Bird Guru is doing:

*Greasecar*
*We run our chevy suburban on waste vegetable oil (WVO), using a system designed by greasecar.com. Any diesel vehicle can be converted to do this. I get close to 20 mpg whether running on WVO or diesel, with no loss of power. The emissions from WVO are better than the emissions from diesel fuel or biodiesel. WVO is not biodiesel, but it is a biofuel.

Think biodiesel and ethanol blended gasoline are friendly than their convential cousins? Think again.

*Green Power*
* What is Green Power? Green power is electricity generated from abundant energy sources that are replenished at a sustainable rate by natural processes. In addition to being sustainable, green power contributes to cleaner air and water. There are many green energy sources, including solar, wind, water, and biomass. Our home is powered by Maine Interfaith Power and Light using a blend of low-impact hyrdo-power and wind power.

Keep in mind conventional electricity prices are rising, due to most power plants being powered by either coal, propane or natural gas, while alternative "green" energy is decreasing in cost as it becomes more popular. It's a smart investment for your wallet and for the planet!

*Terrapass*
*To offset the few miles we do have to drive on diesel we have invested in a terrapass. TerraPass carbon offsets fund clean energy and other projects that result in direct, measurable reductions in carbon emissions. We all contribute to global warming everytime we drive, fly or turn on a light.

Bird Cleaning Tips:

* Try using vinegar and water to clean your cages and accessories with, not only totally bird-safe but also inexspensive and biodegradable. Baking soda is also great for cleaning.

* Instead of using paper on your birds playstands or on the floor under where they hang out, try using towels instead. You can reuse the towels again and again. Remember to wash with cold water, it saves money and energy, and everything comes out just as clean. Natural laundry detergents can also be used in your wash loads, they are biodegradable, totally safe for birds (scented laundry detergents can be hard on birds' sensitive immune systems) and better for your septic system. Rope perches also wash well in the washing machine.
